Membership Statistics: Renewals

BWC In the News | Articles about AAA | BWC Press Releases

Better World Club's renewal rate has reached nearly 80%.

Here are the results for the past 5 months (a month is added 5 weeks after it closes):

  • July: 75.92%
  • June: 77.48%
  • May: 77.21%
  • April: 76.55%
  • March: 73.27%

Our top reasons for non-renewal are:

  • Members did not have need for roadside assistance as they gave up their car or moved overseas. (Yes, it surprised us that this was the #1 reason, too.)
  • Members obtain roadside assistance through the purchase of a new car.

Another major reason for non-renewal is obtaining roadside assistance through an insurance company. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, this can lead to higher yearly premiums when the service is used. Or the service may only be available on the covered car (Better World covers the person, not the automobile.) Or may only be available in accidents or other insurance covered situations.

Some Mobile Phone vendors offer a roadside assistance service, with some automatically including the service without informing the payee. This service, however, is only available if the phone is with you. Moreover, it is often more expensive than a BWC Basic Membership, and includes none of the travel discounts, gas rebates, maps or re-imbursements.

Issues of reliability are not one of the top reasons for non-renewal. This fact combined with our high renewal rate is evidence of our reliability.

Values have also been cited as cause for non-renewal, with our efforts to encourage responsible energy use (Example 1, Example 2) leading some to state a desire to "Eviscerate an environmentalist today".

 Complaints: Keeping it Real

Our most frequent complaint is non-punctual response. Still, our average response time is 38 minutes. (The very nature of roadside assistance means that we will not be able to reach absolutely everyone within 38 minutes. Our goal is to reach you within 30 minutes in an urban setting and 60 minutes in a rural one. Our average time indicates we're doing a pretty good job of reaching our goal.) Learn more about our network. And no auto club is perfect, BWC regularly receives complaints from members switching from AAA, AARP, and Allstate who have had negative experiences when calling for service.
