PROPOSITION 87

Better World Club Endorses California Proposition 87 to Increase Royalty Payments on Oil Drilling

Only Auto Club to Endorse the Proposition

PORTLAND, Oregon - September 5th -Better World Club, the nation's only auto club which seeks to balance a motorist's driving and environmental interests, announced its endorsement of California Proposition 87.

Added to the ballot by signature petitions, the goal of Proposition 87 is to reduce petroleum consumption by 25%, and increase research & development of alternative energy sources and technologies. It raises the R & D funding by bringing California's royalties on oil drilling into line with that of other oil-producing states like Alaska and Texas. California is the third largest oil-producing state, but oil companies don't curently pay oil drilling fees.

Proposition 87 also addresses national security, environmental, and health issues. California is #1 in the nation in oil use, with nearly 50% of its oil coming from foreign sources. California’s air quality is the second worst in the nation. Pollution from cars, trucks and buses that run on gas and diesel is responsible for asthma, lung disease, and cancer, as well as contributing to global warming.

“87 is a proposition that a free-marketer should love: it takes a modest step toward market priced royalties.” Says Better World Club President Mitchell Rofsky. “While we believe that public assets should be auctioned, this is at least a step in the right direction. If oil companies should be subsidized, why not subsidize Bill Gates or the New York Yankees?”

Better World Club is the only auto club to endorse the California initiative. Other clubs have taken a neutral, or in the case of AAA, an actively negative position. AAA has a long tradition of opposing restrictions on--and alternatives to--the automobile: including Mass Transit, Bicycle Paths, and the Clean Air Act. Now the Auto Club of Southern California has officially come out in opposition to California's Proposition 87.

The proposition, which requires any additional costs "not be passed on to consumers through higher prices for oil, gasoline, or diesel fuel”, has been denounced by Thomas McKernan, President and CEO of the Automobile Club of Southern California.

“Gasoline prices in California are high enough already,” noted McKernan. “Proposition 87 would just add insult to injury. This $4 billion oil tax would result in even higher gas prices at the pump. We recommend drivers vote: NO on 87.”

Big oil is opposing Proposition 87 along with the Automobile Club of Southern California. Opponents of 87 have raised nearly $30 million, including $12.8 million from Chevron and $12.6 million from Aera Energy, a joint venture of Exxon/Mobil and Shell oil companies.

Recent studies show approval of Proposition 87 leading 52% to 31%.
