BWC High-Mileage Review

A Car With Seoul

The Hyundai Accent: A Little Car From Korea That’s Slowly Catching Up To Its Japanese Competition

It was only about 40 years ago or so that Americans used to look down at the junky transistor radios and other poor-quality gadgets that came out of Japan. An American wouldn’t even dream of driving a Japanese car back then.

Today, Japanese cars dominate the high-mileage passenger car class, but Hyundai is right there, nipping at their heels. Known initially for the affordability of its cars, Hyundai invested large amounts of time and money into their product line in the late 1990s to upgrade their brand. As a result, Hyundai is producing some great cars that are both affordable and fuel-efficient. One of these is the Hyundai Accent.

The Accent is a fun little car that comes in a 4-door Sedan version and a sporty hatchback. It’s upfront affordability, reliability, fuel efficiency, and relatively decent interior room make it a great commuter car.

While it’s not what you would call a "chick magnet", you can impress your dates by singing, “Lady, step inside my Hyundai,” from the Beck song Debra while you open the passenger door for them.

You can’t do that with a Civic.
